Former Mayor of New Orleans Sentenced To 10 Years in Prison

Ray Nagin, the former mayor of New Orleans, who always depicted himself as a straight speaking anti politician determined to wipe the notorious corrupt culture of the city, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Wednesday for money laundering, bribery and other such corruption activities that were non-ignorable.

During the Hurricane Katrina in the year 2005, Nagin made himself the face of public suffering as well as misery, exploding at the state officials as well as the federal at the height of the flood in the city. However, in the month of February, 2012, he was accused of taking bribes from rich businessmen who sought out his help, more for the rebuilding of Katrina.

Ray Nagin

Nagin denied the accusations of accepting the money, truckloads of granite as gifts for his family business as well as free vacations from the businessmen. Right before he was sentenced on Wednesday in the court, he denied to apologize in front of the media but stated that he trusts God and he believes that God is surely going to put everything back into places.

Since Nagin was the city’s black mayor, he was viewed as a defender by the working as well as poor classes existing in the society. But just like many other politicians who ruled different cities and countries before him, he too got influenced by the environment of corruption.

Before turning into a politician, Nagin was an executive at a communications company and he was politically unknown. However, he gathered support from whites as well as the business community in order to win the office of mayor in the year 2002. He then re-won the election for the year 2006.

Nagin’s style of speaking has always been pretty informal. Yet, he could convince a lot of people towards his affection. But in the end, people believe that his true face has finally been unveiled.
