Google has announced to stop its authorship program and the authors who are linked or their work with Google, will no longer be able to display their pictures in the Google search results. One of the Google team members – John Mueller mentioned; “we’ve also observed that this information isn’t as useful to our users as we’d hoped, and can even distract from those results. With this in mind, we’ve made the difficult decision to stop showing authorship in search results.”
Google team believes that this move has created little impact and less attention of the users as expected. It is the title and the text of the articles that grabs the users’ attention. We have yet not received any reactions or comments from the Google authors, about their feelings towards this move.
It was observed that there are various reasons, to this decision. Google found many users simply treating Google as a visual app and enjoyed the pictures of the authors. This could lead to misuse of images too. Thus, this step was necessary to protect the privacy of these authors and make Google more informative rather just a visual aid.
