Fall of the Berlin wall 25 years ago marked a new beginning for Germany

The Berlin Wall was a symbol of division, and it effectively separated a country’s people from each other. While West Germany was enjoying the fruits of democracy, East Germany was being choked in the grasp of a communist regime. For 28 years 17 million East Germans were hostages in their own country. The Berlin Wall which started as a coiled barbed wire fence and later transitioned into the solid white concrete wall was an effective deterrent for the East Germans who wanted to taste freedom and move to West Germany.

As a matter of fact many people were killed by the East German border guards when they tried to cross the wall, and many more were caught and sent to prison. But all this changed on Nov9, 1989 when the Berlin Wall fell thanks to a decision by a lieutenant colonel from East Germany. When 20,000 protesters were trying to cross the wall, Herald Jaegar kept asking his superiors for order, but none came, so he ordered 46 armed guards under his command to throw open the gates. Because of his decision, Berlin wall fell, and it fell peacefully.

The fall of the wall unified the country and made it a global power again. The country is celebrating 25 years of that historical event. Many dignitaries like Mikhail Gorbachev and Hans-Dietrich Genscher will be present at the celebrations.
