According to the reporters, on Saturday, the Syrian troops had reached the border of the Raqqa province, which is home to the de facto capital of the Islamic State group`s self styled caliphate, in a push that leaves the extremists combating fierce battles on four fronts in Syria and neighboring Iraq.
Islamic State had been controlling the large swaths of the territory in both the countries, and is combating the Syrian troops, US backed fighters and opposition militants Syria and is facing an offensive by Iraqi government forces on their stronghold of Fallujah.
Since August 2014, the government of Syria had no presence in Raqqa, when Islamic State captures the Tabqa air base and put to death scores of government soldiers. Raqqa, the provincial capital became the militant`s first city.
According to the Britain based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, under the cover of Russian air strikes, the Syrian troops reached the administrative border. It added that at the time of three days of fighting, at least 26 Islamic State fighters and nine troops and pro-government gunmen had been put to death.
As per to the UK based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the heavy Russian strikes had struck IS held territory in eastern areas of Hama province, near the boundary of Raqqa, on Friday to facilitate the Syrian army`s advance.
